August 28, 2024
Dear Parents,
We are off to a great start despite the heat! Thank you for your flexibility with the early dismissal on Tuesday. The temps are cooler outside, but our brick school is still a little toasty. It is much better today though than yesterday.
Modified Uniform the rest of the week. If students prefer, they may continue to wear our modified uniform through Friday. PE uniforms for grades 4-8 and appropriate shorts and t-shirts for K-3. We will start the Tuesday after Labor Day with our normal school uniform requirements.
Theme and Prayers
I want to share with you our theme for the year and some prayers that the children will be learning this year. As a parish school, we collaborate with the parish staff on our theme and other faith areas throughout the year. Each morning as part of routine we have a prayer of the month, learn a Bible passage, review or learn procedures for PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), and learn about a Christian virtue. Birthdays are also announced.
Theme: Rooted in prayer, led by the Spirit.
August/September Bible passage: 1 Corinthians 14:15
So what is to be done? I will pray with the spirit, but I will also pray with the mind. I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will also sing praise with the mind.
August/September Prayer: Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the divine power of God,
cast into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who wander about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
August Virtue: Review the definition of a virtue and the virtues of faith, hope and love.
September Virtue: Respect
PBIS Procedures: Voice level, hallway and bathroom procedures have been reviewed. Next week we will begin Mass Procedures.
Theology of the Body
The state of Iowa requires that schools teach Human Growth and Development. We use a Catholic program called “Theology of the Body”, which is taught during Religion class throughout the year. It is based on the writing of Pope Saint John Paul II. The Ruah Woods website states the following about the program:
Our K-12 foundational curriculum equips teachers and parents with church approved tools for forming boys and girls in their God-given identity. REVEALED/ROOTED brings to life Pope St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body in the context of our modern world. Through this curriculum, children gain an understanding of who God is, who they are as image-bearers of God, male or female, and how they fit into the world.
If you have any questions about the program, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Home and School Association
Our Home and School Association has kicked off our school year with an amazing BooHoo/Yahoo Coffee. We are looking forward to many more events throughout the school year. Home and School is always in need of volunteers. Please check out the Home and School Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/saintpaulhomeandschool for upcoming events.
The next event is the Back-to-School Block Party on August 28, 2024.
